descriptive piece: THE SALIDA HIGH FOOTBALL FIELD

by Abby Redmond

All football games are cold, this one however was even colder than most, making the thin warm up pants and jackets for our cheerleading uniforms seem even thinner than normal. People’s breath puffed out in visible white clouds as they assembled, in the home bleachers, and on the other side in the away bleachers. Everyone was bundled up in hats, scarves, gloves, and coats. Their hands clutched hot chocolate. The football players weren’t so bundled up, and neither were the coaches. The coaches sported khaki shorts and purple and black Spartan football shirts. The boys wore their football uniforms.  Some of them were wearing under armor or another layer under their jersey, but still they looked cold, at least to me.

The green grass of the field seems to stretch forever, and after the recent snow it looked slick and mushy, almost as if it wouldn’t hurt as much. There were little areas of white throughout the field and around the sidelines. The dirt track that stretched around the field was muddy. The slush and the murky brown puddles didn’t seem to faze any of the players or coaches. The warm up music began to play, as always, sending a wave of excitement through the air. The football players run, stretch, and pass the ball to warm up. The hours on the score board turn to minutes, and then seconds. The sky gets darker as it closer to game time. The lack of sun makes the hard cement, and metal bleachers seem even colder. As the boys run off the field to have their before-game locker room talk, the cheerleaders, parents, siblings, and just fans, from the stands, form a tunnel and anticipate the beginning of another game.
