I interviewed four high school football players (shown below). My goal was to interview a variety of players and ask questions that would help to confirm or break stereotypes mentioned in the introduction (home page). The football players had a variety of answers: four out of four boys enjoy playing football. Their GPA’s ranged from about a 2.8 to a 3.9 indicating that football players are, in fact, intelligent. All four boys played two other sports, leaving them with a sport for every season. Only one out of three indicated that they were motivated by playing football. Four out of four felt very strongly that hygiene is important to them. The complete interviews are listed below.

INTERVIEW #1: Jared McDonald varsity defensive and offensive starter
1. Why do you play football? Because I like it, and I think its fun. He feels a little pressure from friends and family to play
Yes 3. How long have you been playing football? Um…since I was in, probably second or third grade
Yeah kinda, because sports is a big part of my life and I just love playing sports
I don’t think it really does help me. It’s just something I really like to do. IKD, maybe it will. I think the only way it literally does help me is by helping e get better at my other sports
Kinda, I wouldn’t consider myself different than other athletes, but I consider myself different than the people that just sit at home and don’t really get out much. A good way
Yeah, because I am one of the younger players on the team and I start both sides of the ball. I guess it’s just to go out there and play my position, and don’t mess up
I think it was coaching, and I also think that our first win being on homecoming was a motivation, that got carried out because we won a game and it brought our confidence up, and I think we stepped it up a lot in practice
The crowd doesn’t really effect me, I don’t think about the crowd
Basketball, baseball
I don’t know, probably not good Above a 3.0 12. Is School important in your life? Ya, because I have to go there everyday of my life, and its gonna help me out in the future
Ya I do, I have no clue, hopefully to play sports 14. What motivates you? My friends and family, and the people that I live with and see everyday I guess, and also school and sports
Idk, I don’t think I have one certain trait, I don’t have one, Abby I really don’t know
Yes
Yes, I don’t be thought of as dirt bag or someone that is nasty, and plus it is something that is important to me
INTERVIEW #2: Chris Coscarella, coaches son
1. Why do you play football? I’ve been playing my whole life it’s just kind of been custom in my family that if you’re a Coscarella I guess (laughs) but the sole reason I play football in cuz I enjoy the game plus hitting someone is a good way to relieve everyday stress 2. Do you enjoy playing football? I love playing! 3. How long have you been playing football? See question 1 4. Is football an important part of your life? My life revolves around football (laughs) in and out of the season. I go to camps and lift all off season, everything I do is preparing for football 5. How does playing football benefit you personally? See question 1 6. Do you think that it sets you apart form others? In a positive or negative light? - 7. Are you important to the team? Um..yeah I would say so, I mean not just I’m the quarterback but me and many other guys on the team lay our bodies and every ounce of strength we have on the line every meek and guys like that are just irreplacable 8. How or why do you think that Salida managed to turn the season around? - 9. Do you like the crowd, or does it make you nervous? The crowd is what drives me. The yells and the cheers there is just something about it. It like turns on a switch deep within you and pushes you further, but it is a little nerve wracking. I mean who wouldn’t get a little nervous when your runnin’ plays as a quarterback in front of friends and family, the whole town 10. Do you play any other sports? Wrestling, baseball 11. What is your GPA? Like a 3.9 or somewhere close to that 12. Is School important in your life? - 13. Do you plan on going to college? What do you see yourself doing? - 14. What motivates you? - 15. What is your best trait? - 16. Would you consider dating a girl that isn’t a cheerleader? Has before 17. Is your personal hygiene important to you? Yes, very. How else would I get all the woman? (laughs) 18. How is having your dad as the coach? Well it has its ups and downs. Most people have practice, then go home and take a break from football. I go home and I have to relive all the mistakes and stuff that happened that day at practice but I completely owe my dad everything for making me the athlete that I am today. Because I am constantly being coached by him even at home its made me that much better of an athlete 19. Do other kids treat you differently because of you Dad being the coach? Not really, from an outsider’s point of view it looks kinda like a setup that the coaches kid is the quarterback, but the players see how hard my dad is on me and everyone else. And I think everyone agrees that I’ve earned my position along with everyone else. No one thinks there is any favoritism going on or anything
